Rory Fraser

Every month we feature an insight into the lives of one of our staff members or associates in order to learn more about the people that make up the Ian Dickie team. This month we interview Rory Fraser from our Cape Town sales department.

Dawn Vogelman mentioned in her “staff feature” article a few months ago, that she fondly remembers pushing a young Rory around in her office chair and showing him the outside world from the window sill of the sales office. She noted that even then Rory showed a keen interest in the big trucks and concrete mixers on the covers of engineering magazines, an interest that has clearly not been diminished over the years, as amusingly that same young lad is now a respected member of the very same sales team.

At 24 Rory is possibly one of the youngest members of the Ian Dickie team and certainly the youngest staff member I have interviewed for the staff feature. Rory has worked for Ian Dickie for the past four years and over that time I have had the pleasure of gaining some insight into the young man, outgoing, friendly, enthusiastic, loyal and passionate are words that I feel might best describe his character. Qualities that I am sure will serve him well in his future sales career.

After school Rory had an idea that he would study for a B Com, but soon realised that this was not for him and with his parents blessing, decided instead to start work. Initially he was employed as a plumber and supplemented his income by working as a waiter at night. Today his interests are still influenced by the plumbing experience gained over that period as he says he thoroughly enjoys the Drain & Pipe Cleaning aspect of our business. In the short time Rory has been employed at Ian Dickie he has taken the opportunity to gain a good working knowledge of our Truck Mounted Jetting and Vacuum units and is now directly involved with training of City Council staff in the operation of these awesome machines (150 Council staff trained to date).

Rory’s interests outside of the work environment are focused on the outdoors and keeping fit and healthy. He enjoys hiking and is also a keen rugby player, playing at club level for False Bay (Flank). Rory has been fortunate enough to have travelled quite extensively, not only in Southern Africa, where he has hiked and travelled locally as well as in Namibia and Zimbabwe, but also overseas on two seperate occasions, firstly to attend a Scout Jamboree in Germany and Norway and on another occasion to attend the Rugby World Cup in England, at which time he was also able to visit Selwood in the UK where he received on-site training on the renowned Selwood S150M.

Rory is quick to acknowledge that the Cape Town sales team of Ally, Dawn, Bertram, Brad and Brent have been a great influence on him since he joined the company and he is grateful to them all for their patience and willingness to show him the ropes.

When asked about his thoughts and predictions for the future and how technology is influencing the way Ian Dickie do business, Rory says that marketing tools such as our website and monthly electronic newsletters etc. are invaluable in building brand awareness and driving sales, however he says it is crucial to remember the basics, strong relationships with your customers, keep them happy, deliver on time, know your products and always act with honesty and integrity.

With insights like this it is clear that Rory has the qualities required to be a valuable asset to Ian Dickie in the coming years and judging by the rugby pic he supplied on our homepage it looks like it will be pretty hard to stop this young man from achieving his goals.

We would like to thank Rory for allowing us a small glimpse into his life and wish him all the best for the future.
